The top "attraction" in Duluth on TripAdvisor was to drive Route 61, a scenic drive along the north coast of Lake Superior that runs from Duluth up to Grand Marais. We decided to check it out and took a late afternoon drive on Saturday. I'm glad we did, because the short section of the road we drove on was beautiful. We saw many homes that are right on the lake, varying between large estate homes and smaller Cape Cods and ranches. Lake Superior is the largest of the Great Lakes and the largest fresh water lake in the world. The sky was blue with some clouds, and the combination of the lake and the sky made for a very nice drive along the coast.
Jeff found a pull-off where we could park, and Henry and I walked down to the rocky shore. The water was pretty calm, and in a little pond cut off by a stone jetty, there was a perfect reflection of the sky. We walked along the beach for a bit and took pictures, and then headed back up to the car in search of a place for dinner.
We found a restaurant in Two Harbors called Blackwoods and got a table on the patio for dinner. Ruth picked the place and it was another good choice on her part. All of our meals were very good. Ruth kept eyeing the Diary Queen across the street, and she was careful to only eat about 1/3 of her macaroni and cheese so she could save room for once cream. Smart girl.
There was a sign for a lighthouse, so we drove out to see it. It's a red lighthouse with the house attached. A sign said "no Vacancy," so it looked like you could stay in it if you wanted. Instead of walking up to the lighthouse, we chose to walk out on a jetty with a paved top toward a smaller lighthouse. The sun was beginning to set and the sky was starting to turn pink and purple.
We overheard someone saying that they should head back to their car because the mosquitoes would be out in 20 minutes, and we're no fools - we've heard and seen the infamous mosquitoes up here. That was our cue to head back to the car and drive back to the campground.
